The Reich Labour Service (RAD) was an organization in the National Socialist German Reich. The law for the Reich Labor Service was passed on June 26, 1935. § Section 1 (2) read: “All young Germans of both sexes are obliged to serve their nation in the Reich Labor Service.” § Section 3 (1) read: “The Führer and Reich Chancellor shall determine the number of conscripts to be called up each year and set the duration of the period of service.” Initially, young men (before their military service) were called up for six months for labor service. From the beginning of the Second World War, the Reich Labor Service was extended to include young women.
The Reich Labor Service was an integral part of the economy in National Socialist Germany and a part of education under National Socialism. After the assassination attempt of July 20, 1944 and the subsequent transfer of command of the replacement army to the Waffen-SS, the RAD was assigned the 6-week basic military training with rifles in order to shorten the training time for the troops. The headquarters of the Reich Labor Service was in Berlin-Grunewald.
