Minesweepers, Sub-Chasers and Escort-Vessel high oval openwork badge of non-ferrous metal. A vertical pin on the back. Denazified!

This war badge was established on August 31, 1940 by the Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine, Grand Admiral Raeder, in recognition of the deprived, hard and dangerous service of the crews of the minesweepers, submarine hunters and security units.

The badge, designed by Otto Placzek of Berlin, consists of an outer laurel wreath of oak leaves with the national emblem of an eagle clutching a swastika (both golden coloured) at its apex. The central area features a representation of a sea mine exploding. The medal was first produced in bronze and later in zinc. Inferior quality late-war versions can appear a dull gray as the gold gilt was known to wear off. The badge was worn on the lower part of the left breast pocket of the naval service tunic, underneath the 1st class Iron Cross if awarded, or equivalent grade award.

All crew members who fulfilled the following requirements were eligible for the award: in addition to good and impeccable conduct (no arrest in the last 6 months), participation in at least 3 battles. Outstanding individual deeds or participation in a special operation were also honored with this war badge. The decision was made by the fleet commander. The number of awards is estimated at around 4,400.

Well-known manufacturers include (WH) Walter & Henlein, Gablonz, (R.K.) Rudolf Karneth, Gablonz or Schwerin, Berlin.
