"The situation in Cholm is also very tense". Enclosure is not described. In mid-February 1942, the city was on the verge of being conquered by the Red Army. Scherer considered the "supply of infantrymen" necessary and stated that artillery and heavy weapons were available. A losing battle began, which in the end alone in this part of the battle wounded or killed around 500 soldiers. On March 13, 1942, Adolf Hitler ordered the Scherer combat group to be relieved under all circumstances and one day later ordered a parachute battalion to reinforce the combat group. In June 1942, Scherer handed over the command of the 281st Infantry Division to Major General Wilhelm-Hunold von Stockhausen and then went on a longer home leave home to the Reich. As a result, Adolf Hitler donated the Cholm Shield for the survivors of the cauldron, which was also used for propaganda purposes, including this illustrated book about the heroic deeds of the Scherer combat group. Allegedly, Scherer is said to have submitted a draft to the Fuehrer on his first visit to the Fuehrer's headquarters, whereupon the latter is said to have said: "Hmm, there is nothing I can do about it!"
