The heroic battle for Narvik by Otto Mielke, Steiniger Verlag Berlin 1940.
5-3/4 x 8-3/8 inch, 207 pages, hardcover/bound book with numerous full-page pictures.
"Der Heldenkampf um Narvik" was written by Otto Mielke (a member of a Kriegsmarine artillery unit in German-occupied Norway) and tells the story of the planning of and the military operation to capture the heavily defended city of Narvik. The subtitle Der Vorstoss der Kriegsmarine. Die Operationen des Heeres. Der Einsatz der Luftwaffe translates as “the Advance by the Navy, the Army Operations, the Air Force Mission”, referring to the mountain troops, sailors, paratroopers and fliers - and their participation in the heroic battle for Narvik.
The pictures are printed on glossy, unnumbered pages interspersed in the text and include Kriegsmarine Kommodore Friedrich Bonte (right), Gebirgsjäger aboard a Kriegsmarine ship during the journey north, naval action, cold conditions upon arrival in Narvik, mountain troops carrying skis, General Dietl surrounded by officers, Nazi paratroopers while jumping from Luftwaffe planes and landing in the snow, burning ships in the harbor of Narvik, battle damage and more.
